Scott Clark
Scott Clark, U.S. Army, June 1966 - Aug. 1969
I joined the army with a desire to serve and defend my country and the people of Vietnam from the "menace" of communism. I probably was motivated by some of the same idealism that had earlier led me to Maryknoll.
After basic and advanced infantry training I spent six months at Infantry Officers' Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia where I was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Just before graduation the army, in its infinite wisdom, decided that my poor eyesight would make me a liability in the infantry so I was posted to the Chemical Corps because of my extensive science studies as a premed student.
I was saved from my own (foolish?) willingness for combat and assigned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts as an instructor, teaching soldiers how to protect themselves from chemical, biological, and radiological warfare.
This experience led me into becoming a middle school history teacher where I flourished for 36 years and impacted the lives of thousands of students.
The hand of God truly led me to Maryknoll, the Army, and to teaching.
