Thank you Pat for this added commentary on the early days of Maryknoll. Great times. The world has definitely changed. The Maryknollers ordained after 75? however began to change drastically. Vatican II was no longer a beautiful impetus. JPII priests were more orthodox, possibly more arrogant, they were far fewer and Liberation Theology and the Option for the Poor was now questionable. As John Barth said at our last Council meeting, your group culture of seminary days no longer exists and basically you all are no longer part of the equation or possibly even important and I have better things to do than come to these meetings. Anyway this is my interpretation of what John Barth said. I have heard many guys say they offered help to Maryknoll and Maryknoll refused. So yes the old days were beautiful but the new days are quite cloudy and many of us have been forced to say, we also have better things to do. Are there exceptions, yes Orbis Books, the Maryknoll Lay Missionaries, many of the people who still love Maryknoll, work at Maryknoll and are now called Employees. Many Corporations call their employees Associates. There are also many individual Maryknoll priests who love the old Maryknoll, Vatican II but I would bet that most of them were ordained before 75 and have a deep, inclusive love. David Stang
