Hi john, just thought I'd mention - I live up in Austin and teach esl. Usually my students are from Mexico, central or South America. The organization where I volunteer is Manos de Cristo, which gets much funding from several Presbyterian churches.
Every year, my wife, kids and grand kids go to port aransas and our "traditional" lunch stop is at the Dairy Queen in Karnes city - going and coming - pretty classy, no?

You probably know of my Maryknoll seminary days website - if not, go see:

Karnes City is also the site of a for-profit detention center for some 200 refugee mothers and some 300 small children. I observed first hand US policy in Central America during the late 70s and 1980s. We have been witnessing the effects of those policies along the Texas/Mexico border for years. This article describes well how those policies are linked to recent immigration from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Tom,
My classmate John Donahue Class of '66 died today, Sept. 25, 2014. His former wife, Simone called us this afternoon saying John died of a massive heart attack. He joined the Presbyterian Church and will be buried from there where he lives in Texas.
That's all I know and I just wanted to let you know so that he can be properly listed among the deceased Maryknollers in the next Interchange.

Dear Tom,
Thanks for sharing your memories of John and providing a correction about the number of his children.
There may be others with memories of John that may wish to contribute to Interchange.
John touched many of our lives and was always eager to share his talents with a wide circle of friends and colleagues.

Gerald,

Thank you for posting the mini-bio of John Donahue; very thoughtful of you to do so.

One correction: John is the father of three children - one daughter and two sons - all of adult age.

I had the good fortune to visit with John from time to time over the past several decades. (He visited with Jeanie and me in Austin, Texas, shortly after our marriage, as he was seeking to discern his future relationship with the Church.) John was a man of always-pleasant demeanor and generously endowed with intelligence, kindness, and concern for others. He was respected and loved by the many students he taught over the years at Trinity University, and all who knew him were rather disappointed if he didn’t exercise his Irish humor at least two or three times during every conversation.

It was a privilege for me to represent his Maryknoll classmates and friends upon the occasion of his selection (“ordination”} to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church three years and two months ago. I suspect his flock in Karnes City, Texas, will miss him deeply and for a long time.

Dear Frank and Participants in Interchange,
John Donahue of San Anotonio, Texas, passed away yesterday after a heart attack. John was
ordained a Maryknoll priest in 1966 and served as a missioner in Peru. After leaving Maryknoll
he had a successful career as a professor at
Trinity University in San Antonio followed by a another more recent career as a Presbyterian minister.
John played an important role in the formation of the Joint Committee through a study
he did of those who had left the formal structures of Maryknoll in the 1970's era.
John continued to be active in service to the Maryknoll community over his whole life .
He is survived by his wife, Consuelo, and two adult children.

So sorry to hear this - it must have been sudden and unexpected - he and I just corresponded by email on the 13th.
