From: Ken Riley Ray, If you will send me your mailing address, I have some pictures of Chicago and Glen Ellyn that I took earlier this month. I will send them on to you and you can return them to me, as you have done in the past. I have three pictures of Chicago that may be of interest: Union Station, the Civic Opera House (where I saw my first opera, "Rigoletto,") and the Loop elevated line. I don't recommend visiting Glen Ellyn, as it is unrecognizable. The property is now an 18 hole and a 9 hole golf course, called "The Village Links of Glen Ellyn." I don't know if everyone is aware of the transformation, but I certainly was not. I guess I thought there would be some recognizable remnants there, but it was 50 years ago. Things rarely stay the same. The new entrance to the property is at the corner of the property, approximately where the old ninth hole was located, as I recall it. The topography is completely changed, with former hills eliminated and new ones created, as well as several water holes. After dodging golf balls, the only thing that remained the same was the one water hole we had, just before the sixth green, as I recall. It was the only water hole that had an old willow tree, in the same place as I recalled it back in the 1950's. From there I was able to judge that the new club house is located just about where the main building sat. My guess is where the old entrance road was located is now just a line of trees surrounded by grass. Off to the distant left is a clump of trees, probably where the old club house stood. I was also able to recognize the old DuPage River, identified with the transformer tower in the distance. I asked one of the golfers if it was the DuPage River and he replied, "No. That's just a creek. The DuPage River is farther west, out where I live." I figured he was relatively new to the area and decided not to argue the point. The old road we used to take to the Dairy Bar is now a tree lined road with houses and lawns on either side. See if you think the photos are worth putting onto your email website. Then maybe I'll send them to Interchange to see if it's worth doing an article.
