From: "Swanson, Eleanor" Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 8:42:21 PM Subject: RE: seminary question Hi Ray-- Thanks for getting back to me. I also have an inquiry to a friend who lives in Lakewood--she was recruited by Peter LeJacque for short term mission and is connected to Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers via Peter, the Fathers in Bangladesh, and John Beeching. S0 far she says the buildings were recently demolished despite historic value--well, it is New Jersey, so what do we expect! I entered in 1983, professed in 1985, went to language school in Bolivia. My best Maryknoll Father friend and contemporary was Bob Hurteau who married Riji from my group (another language school romance). Tim Kilkelly, Jim Kofski, and Kevin (name escapes me, but I met him in a cab last summer and they've invested in his being at the Gregorian) are other contemporaries. I went to Guatemala 1985-1989. spent a lot of 1989 "discerning" as we say, and left in 1990. I was one of the few of my time who loved "core theology" with Frazier though I wished Jerry Persha had been a better foil. After leaving, I joined a Maryknoll affiliate group with John Neufeld and Ken Aman--I'm sure you knew them. I keep in contact with Maryknoll friends, am grateful for the growing up they forced me to do, and realize that mission is a very tough vocation I might wish I had, but I don't. A couple of years ago, I was doing an on-line course through Penn State and one of my classmates was from some Baptist Bible college in PA--from some combination of your website and his address I realized that his campus is "THE VENARD" as I always heard it called. The class had to do with assessment and his project was assessing the education they give to students preparing for missionary careers. While I never told him my connection to Maryknoll, I did tell him I had friends in Maryknoll and recognized the name of the place. And I have to say I really enjoyed reading his project since it was a different, Protestant, light on mission preparation and issues. Oh, yes--I used to work in New Haven and when I entered Maryknoll, my cats were adopted by Dan Getz and his then fiancee, Margie--Steve de Mott's group. I think that covers most of my Maryknoll connections and your questions. If I learn any more about the Lakewood seminary I'll let you know. My historian friend is interested because apparently Ngo Dinh Diem of Vietname stayed there for a year or so in the 1950's. The time of a very different Maryknoll from the one you and your class mates remember and stand for, I suspect. With hopes that your Christmas and New Year will be blessed with much peace and joy, Eleanor From: "Swanson, Eleanor" Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 2:48:40 PM Subject: seminary question Hi Ray I'm actually a former Maryknoll Sister (1980's variety) which is why a friend of mine asked me about this subject. He's doing some kind of 1960's research and has run across mention of a Maryknoll Seminary in Lakewood, NJ. Specifically it has come up because Cardinal Spellman apparently had Ngo Dihn Diem living there and at the Knoll. Do you have any information on the Lakewood seminary or know of a Maryknoll publication that shows it? Now he's got me curious because Lakewood is just down the road from us. I think eventually he'll end up checking with the Maryknoll Archives, but I thought I'd shoot you the question since you have such an extensive collection of information on the web.
