Homework for this week will be finishing out the two work sheets and studying (especially) the new vocabulary (furniture and rooms of the house).

[Click] first accusative practice sheet-1.pdf

[Click] Wir sind im Zoo - Einführung Accusative Case-2.pdf

[Click] Audio file with the story "Im Zoo".

Admittedly, this story is a little ridiculous - BUT, since you don't have to focus on vocabulary, you can totally focus on understanding the grammar :))!

I am adding the work sheets as pdfs for Susan and/ or if you possibly want to do them more than once...?

Please do the first work sheet first. As we started in class, first identify the subject in the sentence ("the doer"), then check out the "who or what" is getting done.

Beispiel: Ich habe drei Kinder. Subject: Ich (I am having ....), now we would ask: who or what do you have, asking for the (direct) object: drei Kinder

We will circle/ underline the subject red and the direct object green!

For the second worksheet you are asked to put in the appropriate article; please make use of the chart handed out today and/ or the one on the other worksheet.

For (the) I am looking for the appropriate definite article, for (a) I'm looking for the appropriate indefinite article.

Beispiele: Die Kinder hören (the)_____ Hund. Die Kinder hören den Hund.
(The) ____Hund ist klein. Der Hund ist klein.
Die Kinder sehen (a)______ Katze. Die Kinder sehen eine Katze.
Sie sehen (not a)_______ Hund. Sie sehen keinen Hund.

I strongly recommend doing homework this week.
This will make next week's class much more entertaining.

Please email me if you have questions! Seriously!

[Click] Quizlet - vocabulary - different rooms/areas in the house

Once again, it might be helpful you put (HUGE!) sticky notes on the doors to your different rooms so you get a constant reminder to address those in German.

"Ich bin im Schlafzimmer*" ... "Ich bin im Wohnzimmer*" ... "Ich bin in der Küche*"

Try to write a few samples like the ones I'm adding below. Remember we were imagining having moved.

Now we first said: " Ich brauche den Tisch, die Lampe, das Bett im Wohnzimmer* / in der Küche* / im Schlafzimmer*".

* please just accept these forms "as is" - that grammar will follow soon enough.

The furniture here becomes the direct object of our sentences. To be identified as objects they are put into the accusative case. This might cause changes in the article. Luckily, for the accusative case only the masculine article changes; all the others stay the same. See chart below.

[Click] Nominative/Accusative Articles Case Chart

By now the movers have caused a giant mess and stuff is misplaced all over the house:

Ich brauche den Schreibtisch im Schlafzimmer.
Der Schreibtisch ist nicht im Schlafzimmer.
Ich finde den Schreibtisch im Badezimmer.
Ich brauche keinen Schreibtisch im Badezimmer.
Aber ich brauche einen Spiegel im Badezimmer.
Wo ist der Spiegel?
Er ist nicht im Badezimmer.
Jetzt (now) habe ich keinen Spiegel im Badezimmer.
Das ist schlecht!

Can you write something similar? Where do you need what? Where do you find what?
Go give it a try and we check it out next week.

Eine gute Woche,

NO CLASS THIS WEEK
March 14, 2019

I'm attaching a picture from one of the "board displays", which I find very helpful to summarize last lesson's grammar.
[Click] ie-ei Sound

I'm adding a few more samples, so you can double check whether you completely understood the concept.

There is no "not a" like in English:

"nicht ein" becomes kein
"nicht eine" becomes keine

Now, I'm adding three quizlets; the first one with basic verbs. Most of them you know already, so it's quite some reflection; but I really want you to know all of them well.

[Click] Quizlet (basic verbs)

[Click] Quizlet (furniture, set I, pictured version)

[Click] Quizlet (furniture, set II, pictured version)

The furniture quizlets come with pictures, so I hope this eases the learning. I know y'all are differently busy. If these many new words are too hard to study all at once, please focus mainly on set I.

If you can and want to do more, also do set II.

Another fun activity can be to put sticky notes to the furniture at home (with article AND plural!!!!), so you see them every day. Say them loud when you look at them. Tell your family, your partner, your cat:

Das ist ein Stuhl. Das ist ein Tisch. Das ist eine Lampe etc.

With these things of our daily life studying is a bit easier.

Then try to write samples like those ones above with the new vocabulary:

Das ist ein Stuhl. Das ist keine Lampe. Der Stuhl ist alt. Er ist nicht groß.

You can send me some samples if you want for me to look over them and/ or correct.

Here is audio to practice the "i.e." and "ei" sounds. First listen to it and then speak alongside either Heike or Piet.

[Click] ie_und_ei_Aussprache (Heike & Piet)

Please keep studying your nouns with the articles and the plurals! We'll be using them a lot next week.

Last not least I'm adding a new quizlet with colors and a few other adjectives. We need them to form more sentences.

Please email me if you have questions.

Alphabet words with plurals

Since there is very little regularity in the forming of these plurals, you really have to study those one by one. You might want to tackle the learning by studying them in chunks of five or six words a day. Then add the next five the next day to not get overwhelmed.

Also, please review your numbers, and the grammar of the super important verb: sein
ich bin wir sind
	       du bist ihr seid
	       er,sie,es ist	sie/Sie sind
Then you can solve this worksheet

Here are clock faces numbered for analog (informal) and digital (= formal) readings.
Read those numbers aloud to yourself!

(Also see the following from the first week's lesson):
[Click] Times of the day
[Click] Times of the day (Audio)

Study the above and then print the following form with the blank clock faces
[Click] Blank Clock Faces
Now draw the following digital times:

1) zwanzig Uhr fünfundvierzig
2) drei Uhr siebzehn
3) achtzehn Uhr dreißig
4) null Uhr
5) dreizehn Uhr fünfzehn
6) fünf Uhr siebenundfünfzig

write the digital times in numbers below the clock, e.g.:

vierzehn Uhr achtzehn - 14:18

After this practice turn the page and draw in the hands with the following analog (informal) descriptions:

1) Es ist zwanzig nach drei.
2) Es ist viertel vor zehn.
3) Es ist halb elf.
4) Es ist kurz vor fünf.
5) Es ist viertel nach sieben.
6) Es ist kurz nach halb sechs.

Here are the solutions. ONLY READ AFTER YOU HAVE DONE THE EXAMPLE.
[Click] Solutions
For next week in order to move forward, please look through and study the nouns of the alphabet WITH the articles.

Remember, there are three different genders of nouns:

masculine: der
feminine: die
neuter: das

Here are quizlets for practice
